memoirs of a geisha book review
I have gotten so bad with this book that I keep extra copies. I think this film does a good job with a difficult subject, especially in the West. They go from living in a coastal fishing village in Japan to being taken to Kyoto. Ever. There are some fundamental flaws with this movie, the story is enrapturing and entrancing.
No, really, it is. The ladies did a great job of bringing their characters to life especially Gong Li as Hatsumomo, she portrayal of her was prefect, she had her malicious and b**chy personality down to a science, Michelle Yeoh's turn as her rival Mameha's sweet and slightly mischievous personality great as well.

I give copies away to the most interested friends. On the other hand the guys could have been better cast (Ken Watanbe was ok) but then again this a movie where a good 85% of the focus and story was on the ladies and its female cast did a wonderful job of keeping me interested and enjoyed in journey. But it also detailed a belief system that was reality but no less perverse in marginalizing women and condoning extreme selfishness, unfaithfulness in marital vows, and an assumed right of wealthy males to pander and drink in youth and beauty though often having little to contribute but money. No, really, it is. This film is the perfect example of a love story done right. Or in the case of this one, I ignored it almost immediately when I saw the title. Towards the latter half our protagonist falls deeply in love with her accidental customer & keeps endlessly whining about the ‘ not so ‘ difficult choices she could have made to confess her love for him.
