Give it up, ladies and gentlemen, for Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, whose “Oh, Hello on Broadway” opened on Monday night. Consider that as a trigger warning, if you must, but I find it hard to imagine anyone’s taking offense. Giant tuna sandwiches with blinking human eyes keep appearing in various forms on stage.

But while these actors’ geriatric get-ups are as blatantly fake as the old-age makeup in a grade school production of “Arsenic and Old Lace,” Gil and George (if I may be so familiar) possess an insistent, overbearing reality that turns their creators into shadows. In a loose introductory segment, Gil, an actor, and George, a playwright and suspect in multiple homicide investigations, introduce themselves as “the orange pekoe teabag staining the countertop of American culture”.
After carefully perusing the 24-page laminated menu, they order diner specialties like overcooked burgers and toxic coffee and, of course overstuffed tuna fish sandwiches, after their classic routine, “Too Much Tuna.”. I wasn’t sure what to expect for Oh, Hello on Broadway, given that I didn’t know much about the show (we had relatives in town for Thanksgiving, and they chose it).

They are an army of only two, yet they seem destined to conquer and slay anyone who ventures into the Lyceum Theater, where they have set up their festering — and, admit it, stupendously entertaining — camp. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney have taken their cult hit, “Oh, Hello,” to mainstream Broadway’s Lyceum Theater, a “famously haunted theater,” according to the new residents. I loved it! Kroll and Mulaney elevate their show to something more than just mocking old people by refusing to adhere to a traditional format and letting things play out like an overly-long SNL sketch instead. The core component of their act is pure character comedy. Both Mulaney and Kroll will continue their upward ascent. Frarey Photography. These are borrowed and mangled to deeply satisfying ends in homages (or “home pages,” as Gil pronounces it) to great plays of the past by the likes of Sam Shepard. My only reservation about their project is the fact that some of the humor might not carry over to non-American audiences - I live in the States so it isn't an issue for me, but jokes about NYC might be less funny without context.

Awards The humor is unapologetically slanted to a New York theater audience, but it is, after all, a limited run Broadway show. Its sense of humor is deeply specific and heavily referential... it's also proof that a specific perspective and an alienated audience don't necessarily go hand in hand. "Oh, Hello" is the marriage of two incredibly talented comedians into one fantastic act. Comedy Central’s Nick Kroll and John Mulaney had the promise to revive the male comedy team with their oft-performed skit “Oh, Hello,” about two nerdy old men from Manhattan’s Upper West Side who host a public-access show called “Too Much Tuna.” The big problem with “Oh, Hello on Broadway,” which opened Monday at the Lyceum Theatre in New York, is that Mulaney doesn’t deliver.
The image is an example of a ticket confirmation email that AMC sent you when you purchased your ticket. And this is even before the addition of a giant puppet depicting a tuna sandwich as incubus, which is practically guaranteed to give audience members nightmares.
We learn of George’s adolescence at a school for misfits, where his classmates included the felon Robert Durst, and of the deaths of his three wives (all, mysteriously, on the same staircase). We hear about Gil’s dashed hopes when he failed to become the voice of CBS at an audition he thought he had nailed. To try to scribble them all down would leave any critic with carpal tunnel. You have to be in the know to catch some of their glancing references to arcane Upper West Side lore, like the Judaica shop that’s always closed. With the duo’s improv skills and their packed houses of savvy fans, “Oh, Hello” could develop into a production format that would be all its own — and genuinely original.
Even the 34-year-old actor’s powdered hair and beard look fake. Oh, Hello on Broadway may be one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
