Sherlock Holmes: The Veiled Detective by David Stuart Davies. This particular novel re-tells the story of Sherlock Holmes' early work as an alternative story with some shocking twists. On his return to England, he is recruited by the criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty to spy on the young but intellectually intimidating Sherlock Holmes. While Davies is no stranger to Sherlockian pastiche, having thrown Holmes up against the likes of Dracula and into the midst of the Prisoner of Zenda, The Veiled Detective takes Holmes, to say nothing of Watson, along a very different path. (Which is the best, in my view). Walker agrees to take on the task and taking on a new name, forms a lifelong acquaintance with Holmes that will test his resolve and his values. One can't say too much concerning this novel without giving away the key surprises of the plot. It answered questions it a plausible manner, especially with our modern knowledge of spin and Arthur Conan Doyle's admission that Watson's stories were "edited" for either decorum or to make them more sensational.
