Strip away the Art Deco glory of its towering cityscapes and factories and the synchronized movements of those who move through those environments and what’s even left? Jungleland has one moving scene, in which Stanley and Lion’s resentments come to a boil at a pizza parlor, but these characters are otherwise reduced to pawns who’re pushed through increasingly unconvincing genre-film machinations, in a production without a good genre film’s liveliness. The filmmakers have hit upon something special with the Danvers State Mental Hospital, whose sprawling Victorian edifice looms large over the narrative: A motley crew of asbestos-removal workers, led by matrimonially challenged Gordon (Peter Mullan), run afoul of a baleful, possibly supernatural, influence within its decaying walls. The character is less of an individual, and one whom we wish to see avenged, than a transparent martyr for the collective sins of the wealthy few. But after Jimmy and his mother, Lorna (Kayli Carter), are spirited away from their Montana town by her abusive new husband, Donnie (Will Brittain), the Blackledges bake a cake for the road, load a pistol just in case, and take off to track them down. This surrealist horror film concerns a couple, Elin (Ylva Gallon) and Tobias (Leif Edlund), whose daughter, Maja (Katrina Jakobson), dies from food poisoning, on her birthday no less, while the family is in a hospital for Elin’s own food-related ailment.
This book is amazing! I really don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said in other reviews. (read this question from someone else that could possibly be it). This “feeling” is very much what director Max Winkler is aiming for in his own Jungleland. As a drunk says to Alex (Malcolm McDowell) right before taking a vicious beating: “I don’t want to live anyway! It doesn’t hurt that Bertino, who grew up in Texas, appears to have some actual understanding of how farms work, milking low-thrumming suspense out of, say, the rattling of the fence used to keep in livestock, which the filmmakers also shoot with a keen and empathetic eye. Ballard may have been right that literary sci-fi has provided all the interesting themes and ideas for which sci-fi in general has become known, but he failed to grasp how cinema has expanded our understanding of sci-fi by pricking at our collective visual consciousness.
